Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. As a child Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to word associations. Ford was intrigued by the profession of acting in her teenage years and she joined National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she wasn't a good for the school. Ford rather than applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot at the third time made an application and secured a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among her fellow students. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however in the meantime, she had already made her debut on television in the 1991 season in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate was on television in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate would also frequently work as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season 2000-2001. Tate received recognition for her stand-up comedy, which has been added to her repertoire in 1996.
